Where We Started
Renaissance Manufacturing, RMI, has been a family-owned business for five generations. It all started in 1917 with Stanley Evans, a well-known tailor in England. When Stanley migrated from England to the United States, he unknowingly stepped onto the wrong boat, which was headed to Miami Florida instead of New York City. As soon as he stepped off the boat into Miami, he realized professionally tailored suits would not work in the much warmer climate. He took notice of the hotels being built along Miami Beach for the tourists and realized he could make draperies and bedspreads with his specialized skills. Many of the original hotels along Miami Beach opened with Stanley’s window treatments.
Morris Evans took over leadership of the company when his father, Stanley, passed. When Morris retired in 1960, his daughter, Mary Mappin, and her husband, George Victor Mappin, took over the business. Mary and George Victor Mappin, along with their son, George Evans Mappin, moved the manufacturing business to Greenville, SC, in 1966. From 1966 to 1971, the primary focus of Renaissance was multi-family dwellings. In 1971, they added healthcare fabrication. They added hospitality fabrication to their workroom in 1986. Hospitality has now become their primary focus in not only fabrication but also in custom printing. The customized printing allows Renaissance to assist designers and procurement customers to meet their budgets and desired delivery dates. This has become a large part of the full package of service Renaissance provides. So many customers enjoy being able to create the perfect look they envision for each of their projects.
An Unlikely Asset
As business grew, George met Herschel Walker, retired NFL professional football player and 1982 Heisman Trophy Winner, while playing at the University of Georgia. Herschel, having his own strong ties to the South, bonded with George Evans Mappin and became a close friend. George realized that Herschel thought outside of the box and was a hard worker; he then decided Herschel would be a great asset to our growing business.
Renaissance products are specified by hotel brands and designers all over the country and purchased through hospitality procurement companies everywhere. In 2012, Renaissance signed a contract with Choice Hotels International to be one of their approved window treatment vendors. In 2017, a contract was signed with Wyndham Hotels. And in 2018, we signed a contract with Hilton through their Hilton Suppliers’ Connection network as an approved vendor in the Hilton chain of hotels.
George’s children, Stacey, Carrie, and Beau, as well as his granddaughter, Kenzie, have now joined the family business and hold integral positions keeping the daily operations moving smoothly. RMI is looking forward to many more successful years in the manufacturing business. We strive to satisfy every customer with outstanding work ethic and customer service.
